Covered Parking at Denver Airport: Is It Worth It?

Denver's weather is famously unpredictable. Blue skies can give way to hail in twenty minutes, and a week of sunshine in June can turn into a spring storm on the day you return. For travelers parking near Denver International Airport, the decision between covered and open-air parking is more consequential than it is in most cities.

Covered vs. open-air: the price difference

At most off-airport lots near DIA, covered parking costs $8–$12 more per day than open-air parking. Canopy Airport Parking charges $9/day open-air and $18/day covered — a $9/day premium for protection. ParkDIA charges $11/day uncovered and $22/day covered — an $11/day difference. Over a five-day trip, covered parking adds $45–$55 to your total parking cost. Over two weeks, the premium is $126–$154.

On-airport at DIA, the covered Terminal Garage costs $28/day versus the open-air Economy lot at $13/day — a $15/day premium.

When is covered parking at Denver Airport worth it?

The answer comes down to weather risk and trip length. Colorado's Front Range has one of the highest frequencies of significant hailstorms in the United States. Large hail can dent sheet metal, crack windshields, and trigger comprehensive insurance claims. If your trip falls in the core hail season — May through August — covered parking is genuine protection, not a luxury.

In winter, covered parking protects against ice accumulation on windows and potentially a snow-buried vehicle after a significant storm. While Denver doesn't see constant heavy snow, a single major storm during a 10-day trip can leave an open-air vehicle deeply buried and scraped. In spring and fall, the risk is lower, and open-air parking is typically fine.

Which lots offer covered parking near DIA?

Canopy Airport Parking offers fully covered parking starting from $18/day — one of the best-value covered options near DEN, particularly given the lot's EV charging and rewards program. ParkDIA provides covered storage from $22/day with the convenience of a large lot close to the airport. WallyPark DEN offers covered options, though at a higher price point. On-airport, the Terminal Garage is the primary covered option but at $28/day is the most expensive.

Is covered parking worth it for short trips?

For a 1–2 day trip, the weather risk is lower (shorter exposure window) and the dollar difference is modest — $10–$20. In that case, covered parking is a personal preference. For a trip of 5 days or more from May through September, covered parking is worth considering as genuine weather protection. For long stays of 10–14 days during hail season, covered parking is strongly recommended.
