First Time Flying from Denver Airport? Here's What to Know About Parking

If you're flying out of Denver International Airport for the first time and aren't sure how parking works, this guide will walk you through every step. The system is straightforward once you understand it, and the right choices will save you significant money.

Your Two Main Options: On-Airport and Off-Airport

When you drive to Denver International Airport, you have two parking choices:

  • On-airport parking: DIA's own parking facilities — a large surface Economy lot and a covered Terminal Garage. Rates run $13–$28/day. Convenient but expensive.
  • Off-airport parking: Private lots located 1–3 miles from DEN's terminal. They provide free shuttle service to the terminal and charge $9–$15/day. This is where most experienced Denver travelers park.

For most first-time travelers, off-airport parking is the smarter choice. The shuttle adds about 15 minutes each way, but you'll save $4–$15 per day versus on-airport rates.

What Is an Off-Airport Lot?

Off-airport lots are privately operated parking facilities just outside the airport's immediate boundary. The major ones near DEN include Canopy Airport Parking, ParkDIA, WallyPark, Park2Jet, and Fine Airport Parking. They are fully legal, licensed, and insured — not some random field. They compete for your business by offering lower rates than the airport itself.

Every off-airport lot near DEN includes free 24-hour shuttle service to and from the terminal. When you park, a shuttle picks you up from the lot and drops you at the terminal departure level. When you return, you call the lot from baggage claim and the shuttle picks you up.

How the Shuttle Works

Outbound (going to your flight): After you park your car, the shuttle departs from the lot every 10–20 minutes. You'll either wait at a covered shelter in the lot or receive a text when the next shuttle is ready. The ride to DEN's terminal takes 8–15 minutes. The shuttle drops you at the departure level curb.

Return (coming home): When your plane lands and you have your bags, call the number on your parking confirmation (or use the lot's app if they have one). Tell them you're ready for pickup. Proceed to the ground transportation area outside baggage claim — look for the sign for your lot's shuttle. The shuttle will pick you up and return you to the lot, where your car is waiting.

What to Bring

  • Your parking confirmation: Either printed or on your phone. You'll need the reservation number at check-in and possibly for return pickup.
  • Credit card: For any charges at check-out (additional days due to delay, etc.)
  • The lot's phone number: Save it in your phone before you leave. You'll need it to call for return pickup when you land.

How to Find Your Car When You Return

When you checked in at the lot, you were assigned a specific parking area or row. Most lots give you a ticket or note your space number. When the shuttle returns you to the lot, it stops near or at the section where you parked. Take a photo of your space number or the nearby signs when you park — it saves confusion when you return at 11 PM after a delayed flight.

Total Time Budget

Here's a realistic time budget for using an off-airport lot for the first time:

  • Drive to the lot: depends on your location in Denver metro (20–40 min from central Denver)
  • Check-in and park: 5–10 minutes
  • Wait for shuttle: 5–15 minutes
  • Shuttle ride to terminal: 8–15 minutes
  • Walk to check-in counter: 5 minutes
  • Total from lot arrival to terminal: 23–45 minutes

For domestic flights, arrive at the lot at least 90 minutes before your departure time. For international flights, allow 2.5–3 hours.

A Few More Tips for First-Timers

  • Book your space online before you go — walk-in rates are always higher
  • Write down or screenshot your space number when you park
  • Keep the lot's phone number accessible throughout your trip
  • Tip the shuttle driver if you're able — it's customary and appreciated
