When Is Denver Parking Free? 2026 Guide — Meters, Sundays & Holidays

Denver parking meters are free on Sundays and all federal holidays — but enforcement hours, free zones, and exceptions vary by area. Here's everything you need to know to avoid paying (or getting a ticket) in 2026.

Denver meter enforcement hours

In most Denver zones, parking meter enforcement runs Monday through Saturday, 8am to 8pm. Outside those hours — evenings, overnight, and all day Sunday — meters are not enforced and parking is free. Some high-demand core zones near the 16th Street Mall enforce until 10pm on Friday and Saturday nights; always check the posted sign on the block.

Residential permit zones work differently: they restrict non-permitted vehicles during posted hours (typically 8am–6pm or 8am–10pm) regardless of meter status. If you see an "RPP Zone" sign, permits are required and free parking rules don't apply to visitors.

When are Denver parking meters free?

Denver meters are free on Sundays and on all nine federal holidays. The full holiday list:

  • New Year's Day (January 1)
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day (3rd Monday in January)
  • Presidents Day (3rd Monday in February)
  • Memorial Day (last Monday in May)
  • Juneteenth (June 19)
  • Independence Day (July 4)
  • Labor Day (1st Monday in September)
  • Thanksgiving Day (4th Thursday in November)
  • Christmas Day (December 25)

On these days, meters citywide are unenforced. You can park at any metered space without paying. Time limits are also generally unenforced on holidays, though some blocks with posted "No Parking" or tow-away signs remain in effect 365 days a year.

Downtown Denver free parking areas

Even on weekdays, some parking in and around downtown Denver is free:

  • Residential side streets after 6pm: Many blocks just outside the core meter zone (Capitol Hill, Curtis Park, Whittier) have meters that stop enforcing at 6pm — free parking for evening restaurant or theater visits.
  • 16th Street Mall: There is no on-street parking on the 16th Street Mall itself. Adjacent garages charge standard rates.
  • Cherry Creek: Some private surface lots in Cherry Creek North offer 2 hours of complimentary parking with validation. Street meters enforce Mon–Sat 8am–8pm.
  • Early bird specials: Many downtown garages offer free exit before 8am if you entered after a certain time — check signs when entering.

Are Denver parking meters free on Sunday?

Yes — all Denver on-street meters are free on Sundays, citywide. This is one of the most useful (and underutilized) facts about parking in Denver. Whether you're visiting the Denver Art Museum, catching brunch in RiNo, or shopping in Cherry Creek, Sunday parking is completely free at any metered space.

The only exceptions are private lots and garages, which set their own pricing regardless of day. Metered spaces on public streets, including downtown, LoDo, Capitol Hill, Uptown, and all neighborhood commercial corridors, are free every Sunday.

DIA parking — is it ever free?

Denver International Airport parking is never free. DIA's garages operate 24/7 and rates start at $28/day in the economy garage — with no grace period for brief stops beyond the cell phone lot.

However, off-airport lots near DIA offer significantly lower rates — often $9–15/day — and provide free shuttles to the terminal. For a 7-day trip, switching from DIA's economy garage to an off-airport lot can save $100 or more.

Another option: park near Denver Union Station (where city meters apply) and take the RTD A Line to DIA in 37 minutes for $10.50 one-way. For travelers already downtown, this can be a convenient and cost-effective alternative to driving to the airport.
