The Peña Boulevard funnel

Every road to DIA ends on Peña Boulevard — there is no other way onto airport property. This makes navigation simple but creates congestion choke points during morning and evening rush hours and on heavy travel days (Sunday afternoons, Thanksgiving Wednesday/Sunday, Christmas Eve, etc.). Plan accordingly:

  • Normal: 6–10 minutes from I-70 exit to terminal.
  • Rush hour: 15–25 minutes.
  • Peak travel day: 30–45 minutes.

From downtown Denver (25 mi, 30–40 min)

  1. Take I-25 to I-70 east.
  2. Continue on I-70 east about 18 miles.
  3. Take Exit 284 for Peña Boulevard north toward DIA.
  4. Follow Peña Boulevard 7 miles to the terminal/parking exits.

From Boulder (45 mi, ~55 min)

  1. US-36 east toward Denver.
  2. Take I-270 east toward Limon.
  3. Continue on I-70 east.
  4. Exit 284 for Peña Boulevard north.
  5. Peña Blvd north to DIA.

From Colorado Springs (80 mi, ~90 min)

  1. I-25 north toward Denver.
  2. Take E-470 east (toll road) toward DIA.
  3. E-470 connects directly to Peña Boulevard.
  4. Follow Peña Blvd to the terminal.

E-470 is a toll road — expect ~$15 one-way from Colorado Springs in the express lanes. Pay via ExpressToll transponder or have a license-plate bill mailed.

From Fort Collins (75 mi, ~85 min)

  1. I-25 south toward Denver.
  2. Take E-470 east toward DIA.
  3. E-470 → Peña Boulevard → DIA.

From Aurora (12–18 mi, ~25–35 min)

  1. From central Aurora: I-225 north to I-70 east to Peña Blvd north.
  2. Alternative: take E-470 north directly to Peña Blvd (toll).
  3. From north Aurora: Tower Road north to E-470 east to Peña Blvd.

From the mountains (I-70 west)

Coming back from a ski trip? I-70 east takes you straight to Peña Boulevard:

  • From Vail: ~120 mi, 2–4 hours depending on traffic.
  • From Breckenridge/Frisco: ~95 mi, 1.5–3 hours.
  • From Steamboat: ~160 mi via US-40, ~3 hours.
  • From Aspen: ~200 mi via I-70 east, ~4 hours.

Sunday afternoons in ski season are the worst — leave the mountain by 11am to avoid the heaviest eastbound jam through Eisenhower Tunnel and Idaho Springs.
