DIA Security Wait Times — What to Really Expect at TSA

Denver International Airport moves more than 220,000 passengers per day, which means TSA lines are a major variable in your travel morning. This guide gives you realistic DIA security waiting time expectations, when peaks hit, and the four programs that can shrink your wait to near zero.

Typical DIA TSA wait ranges

These are the ranges most travelers actually experience at DEN. Exact times vary day to day, so treat these as planning guidance rather than guarantees.

When DEN security is busiest

  • Weekday mornings 4:30–7:30 AM — the biggest bank of the day. United's early push drives huge lines at the North and South checkpoints.
  • Sunday afternoons 1–5 PM — ski traffic, weekend returns.
  • Evening surge 4–7 PM — especially during spring break and summer.
  • Peak days of the year — Thanksgiving Wednesday, Friday before Christmas, last day of spring break, July 3rd.

North vs. South vs. A-Bridge checkpoints

DIA has three security checkpoints, and choosing the right one matters:

  • North (Level 6) — largest; TSA PreCheck, CLEAR, and DEN Reserve all available.
  • South (Level 6) — mirror image of North; often a little less crowded early morning.
  • A-Bridge (Level 6) — small checkpoint feeding straight to Concourse A via the walking bridge. If you are on Concourse A and A-Bridge is open, it is almost always the fastest lane.

Four ways to cut your wait

  1. TSA PreCheck — $78 for 5 years. Apply once, breeze through the rest of the decade.
  2. CLEAR — $199/year. Biometric lane that merges with PreCheck. Worth it for frequent fliers.
  3. DEN Reserve — Free. Book a 15-minute window at the North checkpoint. Limited availability.
  4. Pick your hour — Flights between 10 AM and 2 PM almost always have the shortest lines.

How early should you arrive?

Based on typical DIA security wait times, here is a working rule:

  • Domestic, off-peak: 90 minutes before flight.
  • Domestic, peak hours: 2 hours.
  • International: 3 hours.
  • Add 15 minutes if you are parking off-airport and need to shuttle in.
  • Subtract 20–30 minutes if you have PreCheck or CLEAR.
